Saito, Kazuko (Gunma University, Maebashi, Japan), and Susumu Mitsuhashi. Experimental salmonellosis. VI. In vitro transfer of cellular immunity of mouse mononuclear phagocytes. J. Bacteriol. 90:629-634. 1965.-A culture medium of the mononuclear phagocytes (monocytes) of mice immunized with live vaccine of Salmonella enteritidis contains the transfer agent (TA) of cellular immunity from immune to non-immune monocytes. The TA is of ribonucleic acid nature, is nondialyzable through cellophane, and maintains its active state for 3 months in a frozen state (-10 C) and for 24 hr at 37 C.

4:505, 1960). Each rabbit was prebled to assure that its serum was noninhibitory for the growth of PPLO. Two control rabbits were included in this study. One was inoculated with the sediment from 1 liter of the same broth medium which had been incubated but not inoculated with PPLO. The other rabbit served as an uninoculated control. The growth-inhibition test (Fabricant, Avian Diseases 4:505, ...
متن کاملRole of extracellular phospholipases and mononuclear phagocytes in dissemination of cryptococcosis in a murine model.
Secreted phospholipase B (PLB) activity promotes the survival and replication of Cryptococcus neoformans in macrophages in vitro. We therefore investigated the role of mononuclear phagocytes and cryptococcal PLB in the dissemination of infection in a mouse model, using C. neoformans var. grubii wild-type strain H99, a PLB1 deletion mutant (Delta plb1), and a reconstituted strain (Delta plb1(rec...
متن کاملPhagocytosis and intracellular killing of Staphylococcus aureus by normal mouse peritoneal macrophages.
Although Staphylococcus aureus is incapable of intracellular multiplication in cultured mouse peritoneal macrophages, it is killed at a much slower rate than the avirulent Staphylococcus epidermidis. In addition to the presence of capsular material which inhibits phagocytosis of specific strains of S. aureus, the data show that a number of cellular and environmental factors affect the functiona...
متن کاملMurine Salmonellosis Studied by Confocal Microscopy: Salmonella typhimurium Resides Intracellularly Inside Macrophages and Exerts a Cytotoxic Effect on Phagocytes In Vivo
Salmonella typhimurium is considered a facultative intracellular pathogen, but its intracellular location in vivo has not been demonstrated conclusively. Here we describe the development of a new method to study the course of the histopathological processes associated with murine salmonellosis using confocal laser scanning microscopy of immunostained sections of mouse liver. Confocal microscopy...
متن کاملConversion of monocytes to cells capable of anchorage-independent growth in vitro
We investigated the time-course involved in the conversion of mouse blood monocytes in vitro in cells capable of anchorage-independent growth. Two criteria were used to define when monocytes were fully converted to cells similar to mononuclear phagocytes present in inflammatory exudate, such as thioglycollate medium (TM)-elicited peritoneal exudate. They were the production of high levels of pl...
